Gates’ 2nd Birthday

We had a “Choo Choo” birthday party for Gates last weekend.  It was a lot of fun having friends and family over to help celebrate.  The weather could not have been  more perfect.  Gates had a blast playing with his friends but I think his favorite part was eating cupcakes. He kept helping him-self to the mini cupcakes until we had to pull him away kicking and screaming after eating 4.  For his first birthday I thought it was really important to keep his birthday special but small and simple.  For some  reason I got carried away with this birthday and set the bar pretty high for future birthdays.  It was all worth it though because every one including Gates and myself had a blast.

Party inspirations came from http://www.hostessblog.com/2010/07/real-parties-modern-train-birthday/ and the train idea came from http://mrmcgroovys.com/shopcontent.asp?type=Project%20Plans%20Gallery.

I will never throw away a large box again with out making something fun out of.  Gates loves playing in the card board box train we made for the party.  We didn’t use the rivets though.  I assembled the train with some tape and a lot of wood glue we already had on hand.  It is really sturdy, it survived the party with some pretty rowdy 5 year old boys climbing all over it. It took me a couple of days to assemble and paint.  I used just regular craft glue and it surprisingly only took one large bottle of each color.   I am thinking we might need some more boxes to make a rocket or maybe a fire truck next time.
